Green Housekeeping Cleaning With Natural Products}

Green Housekeeping – Cleaning With Natural Products

by

M. B. Aria

Cleanliness is essential for a healthy home, but generally we use too many chemical cleaning products and in too great a quantity, and are unaware of their consequences. There are time honored natural alternatives in the form of green cleaning products that are just as effective, that do not have such a negative impact on our environment, and that will leave your home smelling delightfully fresh and fragrant.

So, what are these natural alternatives and why haven’t we heard of them earlier?

Natural, or Organic cleaning products are a safe, natural alternative to the harmful chemicals found in common home cleaning products. Every organic cleaning cupboard should have white vinegar, lemon juice, baking soda, pure soap, table salt, washing soda, and essential oils to name just some. These environmentally-friendly cleaning products are effective, affordable, healthy and ethical.

The widely advertised commercial products we use today contain a significant concentration of heavy duty chemicals and may not bring the harmony and sweetness to your life that the manufacturers would have you believe. Less than one quarter of the 70,000 chemicals used in cleaning products and toiletries have been fully tested for safety, and substances classified as hazardous waste are found in many common cleaning fluids.

The largest number of occurrences of poisoning are due to non organic cleaning products – drain cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners, bleach, soaps and detergents. Ammonia is a highly volatile chemical frequently found in non-organic cleaning products and can be very damaging to your eyes, respiratory tract and skin. Non organic laundry detergents contain phosphorus, enzymes, ammonia, naphthalene, phenol, sodium nitilotriacetate and countless other chemicals. Non organic cleaning products for toilet bowls may cause pulmonary edema, vomiting or coma if ingested. Oven cleaner is one of the most toxic non organic cleaning products that people use.

Using green cleaning products is the core of natural cleaning. Natural cleaning products are truly cleaner because they are nontoxic, natural, biodegradable, concentrated, and hypoallergenic, and are excellent cleaners. I love environmentally-friendly cleaning products because they are completely safe for the home, they will not harm the environment and have major health benefits. By investing the time to become better informed about the choices that are available to you, you’ll quickly realize that organic cleaning products and recipes are easy to find, and will probably work very nicely into your budget. There are numerous excellent books and information available on ‘green cleaning’ and environmentally-friendly cleaning products.

I confess; I’m a recent convert to using organic cleaning products at home. The only reason I had not ‘converted’ sooner was that no one had informed me of the natural alternative. I have found the products work just as well in almost all situations, is less expensive, healthier, more environmentally friendly and it gives me a great feeling to know that I’m ‘doing the right thing’. My chemical free home is a delight to be in – it looks and feels great and smells wonderful too.

So, with all the information above, why aren’t more of us switching to the natural alternatives? Based on feedback, the answers I received are; 1) people are not educated or aware about the alternatives, 2) people don’t have the time or desire, and 3) many claim the natural solutions don’t work as well as chemicals. I have a personal opinion on all three answers, but the wonderful world we live in means people are very different on many levels. As a result, the reasons listed above are valid to many people.

The goal of this article is not to sell you anything; I just want you to be aware, then you can make your own decision. I do however, strongly urge and encourage you to try the natural alternatives, just once. What have you got to lose? I guarantee the benefits you get will far outweigh any inconveniences you feel you may encounter. You will feel and smell the benefits of switching to natural cleaning products if not immediately, then certainly after a very short time.

So, clear out your old household cleaners and start anew with the natural alternatives and keep your home clean, safe and healthy. Organic cleaning products are definitely the way to go!!

Ash and steam reported over Mount St. Helens

Tuesday, March 8, 2005

Portland, Oregon – A cloud of white steam and ash rose as high as 36,000 feet from Mount St. Helens in the U.S. state of Washington at 5:27 p.m. PST today. The eruption was visible from the Portland metropolitan area in the neighbouring state of Oregon, causing traffic slowdowns as commuters slowed to watch the spectacle. News helicopters have shown photos of lava emerging inside the crater. Although the eruption was mostly over by 6:07 p.m. PST, an ashfall advisory until 9:00 p.m. PST has been announced for communities around the mountain.

The volcano has been building a new dome in its crater in recent months and causing tremors. It seems to have done enough damage to knock out at least two of the seismometers operated on its dome by the Pacific Northwest Seismograph Network, although this could be the result of either damage to the seismometers themselves, or their telemetry equipment.

The volcano is most famous for its dramatic eruption in 1980 which killed 57 people and blew the top off the mountain.

Violent protests break out in Kyrgyzstan over allegedly rigged parliamentary elections

Monday, March 21, 2005

At least 10,000 protesters stormed government buildings, burnt down a police station, and took control of an airport to prevent reinforcements from being flown into Jalal-Abad, Kyrgyzstan today as they demanded the resignation of president Askar Akayev. The protesters claim that recent parliamentary elections were rigged.

According to a police source in the capital of Bishkek, four police were beaten to death in clashes with protesters.

Last week, Akayev warned civil war would break out if there was an attempt to copy the Ukrainian “Orange Revolution.” However, the government says it wants a peaceful resolution. “We have never gone against our own people, especially not with weapons in our hands,” Prime Minister Nikolai Tanayev said.

Opposition leader Kurmanbek Bakiyev says negotiations will only be fruitful if president Akayev himself is involved. “All other lower level negotiations will be just a waste of time,” Bakiyev said.

The U.S. state department issued a statement saying the situation could be dealt with “according to the rule of law,” and spokesman Adam Ereli said, “U.S. officials have been in contact with both the government and opposition to reinforce this message.”

The OSCE stated the elections did not properly measure up to international standards, citing “lack of effective voter access to diverse sources of information, bias in the media, continued de-registration of candidates on minor grounds…, and inaccurate and poorly maintained voter lists.”

British Airways jet makes rough landing at London City Airport

Saturday, February 14, 2009

A BA CityFlyer Avro 146-RJ100 passenger jet with 71 people onboard made a crash-landing at London City Airport on Friday evening, after part of its gear failed upon landing. One passenger was hospitalised after the incident.

According to witnesses, the aeroplane’s front landing gear collapsed into the runway after the aircraft made a rough landing. The plane stopped on the runway, after which the 67 passengers and four crew members were evacuated by the use of emergency chutes.

Following the incident, the airport’s only runway was shut down and incoming flights diverted to other airports in the vicinity.

“Unfortunately, one passenger sustained a minor injury and is currently on the way to hospital. There was one other minor injury,” British Airways said in a statement. “We don’t know the nature of the injury or how it was caused yet. Our priority at the moment is to ensure all the passengers involved in the incident are well cared for by our ground staff.”

Justin Fletcher, a passenger onboard the aeroplane, described what happened in an interview with the BBC: “There was obviously quite a loud bang as the plane scratched in, the stewards and stewardesses were quick to evacuate everyone off, there was a few scrapes and cuts due to hitting the asphalt, all in all everyone seems to be doing quite well now.”

London City Airport is located in the eastern part of London, and is mainly used for domestic and European flights. It handles 80 000 flights and three million passengers a year.

Iranian passenger flight catches fire

Monday, January 25, 2010

Taban Air flight 6437 caught fire as it was landing at Mashhad International Airport in Iran at 7:20 A.M. local time (3:50 GMT) yesterday.

There were no fatalities. 46 people were injured out of 157 passengers and 13 crew members aboard. The flight was scheduled to fly from Abadan to Mashhad, but it made an early landing due to severe weather at the destination and an ill passenger.

As the flight landed amid poor visibility, the plane veered off the runway and gear collapsed, causing the tail to hit the runway. The right wing touched the ground, sheared off, and caught fire. The tail separated after the plane stopped and passengers were evacuated. The runway suffered damage from the tail’s impact. It is not clear whether the tail caught fire before or after landing.

The plane involved in the accident was a Tupolev Tu-154 with tail number RA-85787, built in the former Soviet Union.

The Iranian Civil Aviation Authority has suspended Taban Air’s license.

Top 5 Christmas Party Hair Ideas

By Jessica A Parker

Christmas is approaching and all the best Christmas parties call for fabulous hair. Apart from using top notch hair care products to keep your hair shiny and silky throughout the festive season, you also want to style your hair just right for all the merry-making ahead.

Along with keeping your trusty Kirby grips and styling spray handy in the top draw of your office desk, there are plenty of quick tricks which can work magic to create stunning looks for your locks at the last minute. Here are the top 5 Christmas party hair ideas to help you along.

Party ponytail

The classic ponytail is always an elegant choice for long hair, and it will suit most people regardless of their age. This is also a low maintenance option if your hair is not behaving as it should! Use a small amount of hair care product to tame unruly locks, brush the hair through and secure at the nape of the neck with a sparkly hair band for added Christmas cheer.

Chic short hair

YouTube Preview Image

Short hair doesn’t have to mean a lack of styling. You might not be able to create such a dramatic look with your hair alone but stock up on glamorous tiaras, glitter and sparkly head bands and you could still have the most striking Christmas hair all through party season. Make sure the hair is perfectly tidy and groomed and match immaculate make-up for a strong overall look.

Ultra-glam up-loop

Up-loops are a simple way to make a regular ponytail a bit more dazzling. Slick the hair back with a shine serum or similar hair care product to make it more manageable. Scrape the hair back into a sleek ponytail then pull a big loop of the hair half way through the hair band, leaving strands hanging underneath, to create this polished bun look which is very feminine and luxurious.

Christmas Ball

Chic chignons, ballerina buns and other sophisticated styles will compliment elegant evening wear for more formal Christmas dos. When you opt for some of the more refined up-dos, be sure to groom your hair meticulously in advance for a really gorgeous finish. For a ballerina bun, fit for the catwalk, dampen and then smooth the hair into a ponytail. Twist the ponytail tightly and wrap it around the base, tucking in the ends. Secure the bun with hair pins and then spray it with a light hair care product to keep it all in place as you party the night away.

Office party hair

If you want to really let your hair down and transform a sensible work do into a foxy look for the office party, you can attempt any of the looks above, and braiding is a good alternative. Braid small amounts of your hair while it dries in the morning before work and clamp each section with straighteners so that the braids set firm. This way, you can unpick the braids just before the party, revealing fun and funky waves. Using some hair care product such as a light spray will hold the waves in place all evening.
